How Movement Leads to Mindfulness
Apr 25, 2025
🌿 The Body Is the Gateway
We often think of mindfulness as something we do with the mind — paying attention, staying present, noticing thoughts. But before there were thoughts, there was breath. Before there was story, there was sensation.
Your body is the one part of you that’s always in the present moment. It cannot go into the past or the future. When you return to your body, you return to now.
🌀 Awareness Through Movement
In the Feldenkrais Method — the foundation of my Awareness Through Movement course — we explore gentle, structured movements that don’t stretch or strain the body. Instead, they invite it into awareness.
You don’t push.
You don’t force.
You simply notice how you move.
And that noticing changes everything.
🧘 Why Movement Matters
Most of us are trained to override our bodies:
-
We sit in discomfort
-
We push through fatigue
-
We ignore pain signals
-
We breathe shallowly without realizing it
Awareness through movement restores something deeply intuitive — the sense that your body is your teacher, not your obstacle.
🌱 What Happens When You Move with Awareness?
-
You begin to move more efficiently
-
You experience less pain
-
You discover a kind of “moving meditation” that’s accessible even when seated or lying down
-
And over time, your relationship with your body softens and deepens
