Who Are You Without Your Story? (Beyond the Ego-Mind)

Apr 25, 2025

🧠 The Ego-Mind and the Self-Image

We all carry a version of ourselves — a story built from memories, achievements, wounds, and expectations.

It says:

“This is who I am.”
“This is what I’ve been through.”
“This is what I must become.”

This is what I call the ego-mind — a fixed self-image we’ve unconsciously identified with. And while it’s not inherently bad, it often becomes a cage.

🎭 The Performance of Identity

The ego-mind is always performing:

  • Trying to be “good enough”

  • Avoiding failure

  • Seeking validation

  • Maintaining control

It’s exhausting — and it keeps us from the actual experience of being alive.

Awareness is what lets us step off that stage.

👁 Awareness Isn’t the Mind — It’s What Sees the Mind

When you begin to observe your thoughts rather than believe them…
When you notice your emotional reactions rather than become them…
When you watch yourself reaching for approval and gently pause…

That’s awareness.
It’s not a thought.
It’s a witnessing presence that was always there, just unnoticed.

🌀 “Losing Your Mind” in the Best Way

Fritz Perls, the founder of Gestalt Therapy, once said:

“Lose your mind and come to your senses.”

You don’t need to destroy your ego.
You just need to disidentify with it — to stop believing that’s all you are.

You are not the voice in your head.
You are the one hearing it.

🌱 A Practice to Try

Today, notice how often you speak or act from the need to:

  • Be right

  • Be liked

  • Be in control

  • Be the best

Then pause.
Breathe.
And ask:

“What’s here if I don’t play that role?”

You may find stillness.
Or grief.
Or a strange freedom you weren’t expecting.

All of it is welcome.
